Hunters Creek

The Online Community for Hunters Creek in Herndon, VA

This week I rediscovered a great resource.  Fairfax County Master Gardeners provide lawn and garden advice to county residents.  Sponsored byland grant universities Virginia Tech and Virginia State, as well as local and state governments, they have a variety of programs including:

  • Plant Clinics: Bring your weeds and questions to the Herndon Farmers Market for free answers.
  • Soil Tests: For only $10 per sample they analyze your yard's nutritional needs.  Pick up a kit at the Herndon Library.
  • Home Turf Program: They will send an expert to assess your lawn and discuss improvement and maintenance options.  The $25 fee includes one soil test.

They also have speakers who will come to your event - something to consider for a future Homeowner's meeting.  For details about these and other programs or to see some of the information they provide free online, visit:

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with them in any way and only used their services many, many years ago - but I will be using them again soon.

Also, I am in the Master Gardener program (first year) and I believe Jane on Merlins is too. You will probably run into us at a local plant clinic. Bring in a sample of your plant problem and we can help you out.

Hi Marty -

I'd like to also add here that Herndon has a Community Forester available.

Town of Herndon Community Forester

The Town has on staff a certified arborist serving as the Town's Community Forester, John Dudzinsky.  John is responsible for the health and welfare of trees on Town property. Citizens desiring information and advice on the protection of trees against insects and diseases or who would like to report a hazardous tree should contact the John at (703) 787-7380 orjohn.dudzinsky@herndon-va.gov.

He had come by and spoke with me last summer as my tree had died and found that my plants were diseased and told me how to fix it.  Highly recommend him as he is available to us as a Town Service.

~ Colleen ~ 505 Merlins Lane aka McMerlins!

He visited my yard, too - he was very knowledgeable about my trees, made great suggestions, and followed up on my questions in email.  Definitely another great free resource!
